2010 Reach Workcamp
The destination is Lockport, NY and the dates are June 25 - July 3! Youth entering 9th-12th grades and college (in the Fall of 2010) and a group of adult leaders are traveling to this city to perform an outreach and service ministry by working on the homes of poor, elderly and disabled people.
Lockport, NY has a rich heritage, which includes the beginning of the industrial age in America. Lockport was incorporated as a village March 26, 1829. During the early 1850s, Birdsill Holly inventor, industrialist and engineer, designed and supervised the construction of a 1700-foot underground power tunnel in Lockport, NY, which provided water for mechanical power to three manufacturing companies employing close to 2000 people.
In modern days, the use of pleasure boats on the canal is ever increasing. Many look at the history of the Erie Canal and the cities and towns built around this manmade waterway as a new source of industry - the canal tourism industry. As in the past, the canal may once again be the source of Lockport's growth.

“Fun Day”
On the Saturday before the workcamp, the group spends most of the day doing something fun together. This is a time to have some fun and laughs together, build relationships, and bond. Examples of “Fun Day” adventures done in the past include going to Cedar Point and King’s Island amusement parks, visiting the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame, and seeing a Cleveland Indians baseball game. The cost of admission is covered by the church; however, the lunch and dinner meals on this day are the responsibility of the campers.
Registration & Forms
Registration involves two things, payment (explained in the “Cost & Payment Deadlines” section) and forms. All campers must complete the Workcamp forms and Calvary UMC forms and submit them to the Church Office. They may be downloaded here in CSM Parents Section.
Adult leaders have one more requirement pertaining to registration. All adult leaders must have completed child protection policy training in the last two years. Classes are held periodically. Watch the Worship Folder and other church communications for dates and times or contact the church office.
Cost & Payment Deadlines
The cost per camper is $375, 100% of which goes directly to Reach Workcamps to pay for school accommodations, 16 meals from Sunday evening dinner to Saturday morning breakfast (except for Wednesday evening), supplemental health insurance, materials to be used for the residents’ homes, program materials, and a t-shirt.
Regarding payment, the entire balance can be paid in a single payment via cash or check written to “Calvary UMC” (with “Reach Workcamp” in the memo line). Or, payments can be made according to the following schedule for each person attending:
• Non-Refundable Deposit - $75 due at registration to secure a spot
• Installment #1 - $100 due by February 1, 2009
• Installment #2 - $100 due by March 1, 2009
• Installment #3 - $100 or remaining family balance due by April 1, 2009.
The Director of Student Ministries and the committee that supports this program area do not want personal financial issues to prevent a youth or adult from attending workcamp. They want anyone with an interest, passion, or calling to attend the Reach Workcamp to be able to go, no matter what the personal financial situation is. People are encouraged to contact Michael Pitzer with questions or information about the cost and deadlines.
Additionally, the Director and the committee understand the financial burden workcamp can be when multiple family members are going and one or both parents are serving as an adult leader. To help families in this situation, we encourage these adult leaders to pay as much of the $375 as they are able, even if it’s not the full amount. Again, you are welcome to contact Michael Pitzer with questions.
Buy-a-Mile Fundraiser
Every year a few weeks prior to the workcamp, a fundraiser named “Buy-a-Mile” is held in the atrium on several Sunday mornings. The donations received through this fundraiser help offset bus transportation, church van fuel costs, and trailer rental. Proceeds from this event are tax-deductible and recorded on giving statements if desired by the giver.
